History on Greenwood:
Located in Tulsa, Oklahoma, Greenwood is a historic freedom colony and one of the most prominent concentrations of African American businesses in the U.S. during the 20th century. Also known as “Black Wall Street,” it was one of the most successful and prosperous majority African American communities in the U.S. However, in the Tulsa race massacre of 1921, Black Wall Street was burned to the ground. This was one of the most devastating massacres in the U.S. where white residents massacred around 300 black residents, injured a lot more, and left 5,000 homeless. The surviving residents rebuilt Tulsa in under ten years regardless of the opposition from the white political and business leaders. This continued as a lively black community until the 1950s and 60s when it was overturned by the federal government. Since then, city leaders have tried to inspire other economic activity nearby.
